Job Description:
Investment Consultant

Pacific Life Fund Advisors ("PLFA") serves as the advisor to more than $50 billion of assets under management.  Additionally, the team manages more than $30 billion in multi-asset portfolios across a broad spectrum of strategies. PLFA's investment strategies employ strategic, dynamic, and tactical approaches, as well as solution-based techniques with a focus on liquid alternatives strategies. The Research team within PLFA is responsible for manager research, portfolio construction, and derivatives trading directives for the multi-asset portfolios. The Investment Consultant will report to the Director of Research and will provide support to Pacific Life Fund Advisors (PLFA), the Fund Boards, and Pacific Life's divisions.
 
The Investment Consultant is a key member of the Research team and will be relied upon to oversee investment portfolios managed in the equity, fixed income and alternatives asset classes. The selected individual is expected to provide analysis, support and make recommendations for manager replacements on the fund platform, when appropriate.  The individual must have a strong knowledge in financial markets, familiarity with a wide range asset classes and executive presence to evaluate portfolio managers and senior leaders such as Chief Executive Officers, Chief Risk Officers, and other executives of external asset management firms.
 
The Investment Consultant will also play an integral role in evolving the portfolio construction and trading initiatives which support the portfolio management of existing multi-asset strategies. This will require working knowledge of capital markets, OTC derivatives, fixed income, equities, as well as the ability to develop and manage processes to construct portfolios.  Strong attention to detail and the ability to work under pressure is important as the individual will be responsible for determining fund-of-fund allocations and executing large trades. 
 
The Investment Consultant will also be responsible for all Fund Board reporting relating to the performance and fees of our existing portfolios and mangers.  Accuracy of work is imperative here as it is relied upon by the Board of Trustees and Senior Management regarding the evaluation and oversight of PLFA's portfolios.  
 
Responsibilities:
   

  •       Manager Research - Evaluate existing and prospective managers supporting the Pacific Select Fund and Pacific Funds platforms comprising $50 billion of combined assets, on an ongoing basis. This includes delivering manager recommendations to senior management, supporting product development initiatives, and assisting with marketing efforts via white papers, presentations, conference calls, etc.
  •       Fund Board Advisor - Deliver analysis and investment updates to the Board of Trustees and executive management for each Board meeting including fund attribution analysis, performance summaries, new manager and product recommendation memos.
  •       Portfolio Construction - Act as key contributor to the portfolio construction process of the more than 15 portfolios and over $30 billion in assets managed by PLFA. This includes presenting an evaluation of portfolio exposures, sharing manager outlooks and market themes to the team members and the Investment Committee.
  •       Derivatives Trading - Responsible for executing trading directives from PLFA's Investment Committee for the multi-asset portfolios managed by the team. Ability to create, maintain and unwind various OTC derivatives, futures, and ETFs. Assist with management of counterparties and continual evaluation and enhancement of the firm's trade process to ensure accuracy and alignment with industry best practices.
  •       Compliance / Legal / Operations Support - Provide the necessary support for PLFA's portfolios, fund managers, and asset allocation models needed to carry out PLFA's fund compliance responsibilities. 
    Factors for Success :
  •       7+ years of capital markets experience. Asset management experience strongly preferred.
  •       Comprehensive knowledge of capital markets, investment concepts, with statistical / quantitative aptitude is desired.
  •       Portfolio management, asset allocation, portfolio construction experience and/or history as a securities analyst are preferred.
  •       Experience trading OTC equity and fixed income index total return swaps is preferred; experience trading equity futures is also a plus.   Familiarity with trading and order management software for implementing derivatives trades in mutual fund or separate account vehicles is preferred.
  •       Strong analytical, presentation, and interpersonal skills; Firm presence when interacting with senior-level investment professionals is necessary.
  •       Clear and concise report and investment writing skills, with strong attention to detail is a must.
  •       Familiarity with various industry databases (Bloomberg, Morningstar, Zephyr, Factset, Barra Risk Models, Evestment) is preferred.
  •       Specific experience with or knowledge of equities and hedge fund (non-40 act) strategies is a plus.
  •       Minimum undergraduate degree in Finance / Economics or other related field required. CFA charter (or progress toward) preferred. #LI-JB1
