PURPOSE:
Under the general supervision of the Student Disability Resources (SDR) Manager, incumbents facilitate communication between Deaf, Hard-of-Hearing, Deaf-Blind, and hearing consumers in the campus community for the purpose of providing communication access in classrooms, study groups, student activities and events, field trips, and meetings with faculty and staff. Interpreters may also interpret for university functions, workshops, lectures, performances and commencement ceremonies.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Provide interpreting services for one or more students for assigned classes through the use of American Sign Language (ASL), signed English, transliterating, and/or another manual sign system based on the needs of the consumer (student, faculty member, visitor) and ensuring that register, tone, intent, and content of the message is conveyed accurately.
2.Provide interpreting services for short-term individual assignments which may include conferences, meetings, and other university- or academic-related events/activities, ensuring that register, tone, intent, and content of the message is conveyed accurately.
3.Facilitate communication through the use of oral or tactile interpreting methods when appropriate to the consumer.
Other Functions:
1.Follows policies and procedures established by SDR, CSUMB, and/or the CSU.
2.Reports and maintains accurate records of hours of service provided for different departments.
3.Performs other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Interpreter I: Provides interpreting services primarily in classroom or related activities involving standard complexity in terms of communication system, difficulty of subject matter, speed of interpreting, and number of consumers served simultaneously. Individual assignments may vary in type and extent of knowledge and abilities, but common requirements include the following:

Knowledge: Assignments require knowledge of: the process of interpretation; ASL and/or an English sign system as required by the student(s); techniques used in communicating with Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing consumers; the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct; vocabulary used in the courses to which the interpreter is assigned; and a demonstrated knowledge of Deaf Culture.

Abilities: Ability to hear spoken English and use ASL, Signed English, and/or another manual sign system to effectively generate language at a speed required by the assignment, in a variety of settings such as a classroom, conference, and/or one-on-one meeting; collaborate effectively with interpreter team; and work with students from diverse backgrounds.

Interpreter II: Provides interpreting services in complex assignments requiring higher levels of training, skills, certification, and experience. Assignments may include advanced level or highly complex classes requiring significant, rapid interaction using specialized vocabulary; discussion situations in classrooms, conferences and workshops involving advanced and/or complex topics requiring significant sign-to-voice and voice-to-sign translations; and more complex interpreting situations such as conferences, workshops, seminars, theatrical, and/or other platform settings where multiple consumers are served simultaneously.

Knowledge: In addition to the knowledge required of the Interpreter I, assignments require: thorough knowledge of the interpreting process; demonstrated understanding of the special communication needs of Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing consumers; comprehensive understanding of Deaf Culture; working knowledge of platform interpreting techniques; and specific knowledge of specialized vocabulary and techniques used in interpreting professional and technical subject matter.

Abilities: In addition to the abilities required of the Interpreter I, the Interpreter II must be able to: interpret effectively at a level requiring unique terminology and language; effectively shift between manual sign system to spoken English and vice versa in highly interactive situations such as discussions, workshops, and seminars; interpret difficult and complex terms, concepts, ideas and emotions; learn unique subject matter and terminology; adjust to a broad range of consumer needs and preferences; collaborate effectively with an interpreter team.

Minimum Qualifications

Interpreter I: Any combination of formal training and relevant documented interpreting experience that demonstrates assurance of the skills appropriate for the level of the assignment(s) is required. Typically, sufficient interpreting training or experience requires graduation from an interpreter training program and/or relevant documented interpreting experience. In addition, a wide acquaintance with academic higher education through attendance at a postsecondary educational institution may be essential to fully comprehend and accurately interpret the concepts, language, and vocabulary used in the assigned instructional, academic, and/or administrative situations.

Interpreter II: Generally, wide acquaintance with academic higher education through attendance at or graduation from a four year college or university may be essential to provide interpreting services at a level required for the position assignments. In addition, two years of relevant documented interpreting experience in a variety of settings usually are needed to perform at the level required for position assignments. Certification Requirements: Salary Range A: Incumbents must possess and maintain skills certification in either interpreting or transliteration as issued by the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or possess and maintain NIC (National Interpreter Certification) certification issued by the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or comparable certification. Salary Range B: Incumbents must possess and maintain skills certification in both interpreting and transliteration from RID or possess and maintain NIC Advanced (National Interpreter Certification) certification issued by the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or comparable certification.

Required/Specialized Skills

Fundamental knowledge of the interpreting process; fluency in American Sign Language and other manual systems; demonstrated understanding of the communication needs of Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing consumers; working knowledge of academic vocabulary in a variety of subjects; skilled in terminology, language, instruction, concept, theory, and emotion to convey all aspects of the lecture, teaching material, and activities; responsiveness to consumers communication needs and preferences.

Preferred Qualifications

Interpreter I: At least a BA/BS degree; NAD certification at Level 4; a minimum of two years documented experience interpreting at the university level. Highly desirable: ability to use a broad range of technology including technical fluency with Google drive, mail, and calendar.
Interpreter II: At least a BA/BS degree; NAD certification at Level 5. Highly desirable: the ability to interpret effectively from a remote location; ability to use a broad range of technology including technical fluency with Google drive, mail, and calendar.

Special Conditions of Employment

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with CSUMB. The person holding this position is considered a mandated reporter under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
This position will have a duty to report to the Campus Title IX Officer information pertaining to victims of sex discrimination, sexual harassment, sexual misconduct, dating/domestic violence, and stalking as required by CSU Executive Order 1095.
This position may be required to comply with confidentiality requirements outlined in the Department of Educations Family Educational Rights and Privacy and Californias Educational Code Chapter 13 regarding sensitive student issues.
This position will have responsibilities that require the employee to possess a National Interpreter Certification or other certification in order to meet minimum job qualifications and/or to qualify for continued employment.
May require occasional evenings and/or weekend work.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Office environment with standard equipment and tasks. Position requires working at a computer and desk for extended periods of time. May require travel between campus offices and off-campus locations.
