Job Description

Under the direction of the managing editor, the Communications Writer is responsible for helping to develop marketing communications and responses to governmental requests for proposals (RFPs) for Tufts Health Plan Public Plans (THPP), writing to the full scope of THPP's product offerings. The Communications Writer supports the objectives of two teams: the Communications and Community Relations Team and the Product Management Team. The Communications Writer creates high-quality external stakeholder-facing business communications, empowering our customers with clear and concise content about Tufts Health Public Plan's product offering and services. The Communications Writer also creates "winning" responses to Requests for Proposals (RFPs), Requests for Information (RFIs), and Questionnaires received in THPP's Product Management department according to required specifications and deadlines, with particular emphasis on large, complex, high-profile proposals.

* Write and develop proposals. He or she will manage the production and delivery of the finished proposal.
* Write and edit copy to support marketing objectives, both new and existing. The Communications Writer will produce and review copy for the following communication types: direct mail (e.g., letters, postcards), newsletters, web pages, advertising, brochure and flyers, signage, and emails. These communications will reach member and provider audiences. The Communications Writer will work with external partners on design, production, and translation.
* Ensure our brand voice and tone is maintained consistently, and that an audience point of view has been considered and applied to all communications targeting current and prospective members. Calls to action must be clear, strong, and appropriate from a business perspective.
* Assess what is required in the bid response, determining whether the information is currently available and, if not, coordinating the collection of the information with other departments (often Manager-level or above contacts).
* Maintain and update the Public Plans Proposal Database, which includes boilerplate language, resumes, exhibits, testimonials, success stories, awards/recognition, and other proposal collateral.
* Build and maintain strong working relationships with clients and external partners. In particular, the Communications Writer must receive and directly address client needs and situations.
* Build and maintain strong working relationships with subject matter experts (SMEs) from all departments. The Communications Writer leverages Tufts Health Plan enterprise resources and software tools to optimize the proposal response process, including the use of PMAPS, FileNet, and other tools.
* Report response status to THPP leadership and identify any/all project gaps that could jeopardize successful and timely completion of a project.

Job Requirements

EDUCATION: (Minimum education required)
BA or BS degree required; major in English, journalism, public relations, health policy, or related field preferred.

EXPERIENCE: (Years of experience)
Minimum of 7 years of writing experience for health care and/or government bids. Candidate should possess exceptional writing and editing skills that demonstrate a natural command of organization and syntax. Must have the ability to communicate effectively with SMEs from all departments of the organization (especially executive-level personnel). Excellent analytical and critical-thinking skills required for understanding complex product offerings and value propositions and defining them in succinct, persuasive written responses. Ability to work independently, self-motivated, and creative in problem solving. Experience in an industry similar to Tufts Health Plan is preferred. Required proficiency with Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat. Adobe Creative Suite experience preferred.

SKILL REQUIREMENTS: (Include interpersonal skills)
- Experience copyediting is plus.
- Requires ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, ability to make decisions independently, with a strong understanding of organizational impact. Must possess the ability to analyze and clearly summarize business and numerical data.
- Must be able to work cooperatively as a team member as either a participant or leader. Interpersonal skills sufficient to clearly communicate with internal and external customers over the telephone, through written communications, in meetings or presentations are required.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: (include special requirements, e.g., lifting, travel, overtime)
- Fast paced office environment handling multiple demands. Must be able to exercise appropriate situational judgment as necessary. Must have strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Requires ability to use desktop computer equipment for extended periods to create documents and conduct numerical analysis.
- General office setting.
- May require occasional weekend hours to meet deadlines.
